Training for Tuesday!

Hey guys, the week is flying by and for you folk with Thanksgiving this week I'm sure you're happy. I wish that were me honestly ... if only for the day off. But no such luck over here.

Anyway, it's the last Tuesday of the month so I'm here to talk about my training. You know know for that 5k I'm supposed to be running in January? Well about that .... *crickets*

The story goes something like this. In Australia, I was pumped. I spent a whole month with my sister and her husband both of whom run half and full marathons (my brother in law actually has a marathon next week)! Naturally while I was there I was all like this:

All the runs ...

Lets forward to the present day shall we? I got back home to  HUGE raise in salary (yay me) and a f*@&* tonne more work. Slap my masters on to that, the fact that I tutor at a university, actually try to maintain an active social life ... and for good measure lets throw in the fact that November pretty much sucked dirty balls (excusez mon fran├žais) ... and well lets just say I didn't get much running done. In fact what I did get was 5 pounds and a whole lot of this:

The cat's tail is actually moving ... look at him go ... so yeah lets just subtract the moving tail and yup that's me.

You know what I also got? A whole lot of excuses!!! Like the ones up there! In spite of the fact that I am busy so are many others. I actually hate to hear people complain about being soooooooo busy. People are running countries and finding time to go to the gym. What the heck is my problem over here? What really got me down I think is my first attempt at a run two weeks ago. I was burnt out in 2 minutes. That's not a lot of running and let me tell you I was completely beat. There was just no finishing it, I had to walk! So yes, the excuses have since piled up.

Can I wake up an hour earlier to take a run? Yes, but I don't do it. Can I go to the gym late at night and get a run on a treadmill? Yup ... again ... the excuses show up.

Truth be told, I am certainly not happy with where I am at right now and I know I have to push myself beyond my comfort zone but the motivation is close to zero. And frankly that's when you need to push. I said a whole lot but it boils down to one thing, I feel like I'm failing at something I actually love to do. Something I actually feel good doing. And that simply needs to change.

So the plan: I will run this week and every week for the rest of the year. And I will put the excuses aside. I need to get my butt in gear and no excuses will work this time around. Honestly, I read Tracy's post last week and felt so inspired to just drop everything and take a run. I think I'll read it again and take a run this evening :)

I'll leave you guys with this quote that has inspired me for years. I usually remember this quote when I have a hard day at work or school or I'm just having a rough go at life. But thinking about it ... it pretty much applies to my running as well.

Have a great Tuesday guys!

  1. It can be really hard to find the time. I absolutely hate alarm clocks, so I feel your pain on setting one. I have mornings off, so I usually try to set aside certain hour to be my workout time.. unless I wake up late or have plans that morning. I have been off schedule ever since it started getting cold here. I have been thinking of jumping into yoga. Although, we went for a run last night and it felt soo amazing to run after not having run for a few weeks.

  3. I love that quote :) and I'm so glad you're pumped to get back into running, I think starting again or getting back into it, as with anything, is the hardest. Once you've done it for a couple weeks, you'll be right as rain :) I have no doubt you can do it!

  6. That is a GREAT quote. Hoping another few of my favorites might help some too:
"What we hope ever to do with ease, we must learn first to do with diligence."
"Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they have a second."
Running is HARD. I know that, Tracy knows that, we all know that. In the beginning I would get really discouraged that it wasn't easy for me and I would stop. It took me a while to realize that it's never *always* easy for anybody. And the more you run, the easier it is. The fact that you had to stop after 2 minutes and walk is NO BIG DEAL! Run/walk is a method, a method a LOT of people use. So don't let it get you down. Running only gets easier the more you do it — knowing that might be a huge help. I know so well how easy it is to make excuses — hell, I've been doing the same thing. But it comes down to just making a decision about what you want your priorities to be. And if it's not running, thats OKAY! But I think you do really want to run this 5k, and I think if you make yourself a schedule — even 3 runs/week is plenty for a 5k, try 2 on weekends and 1 on Wednesday? — you'll easily be able to accomplish this goal. I'm rooting for you!

  13. I do some of my best running when other aspects of my life are kicking my ass. I know it's hard to get started again but I bet once you do get out there regularly again, you'll feel so much better about everything else you have going on. It sounds like this 5k is something you're really determined to do and I have no doubt that you're more than capable. Make a decision that you want it, and you got it. I'm always here for advice or encouragement :)

  14. Hey. Funny thing. When I started running my initial goal was to run without stopping for ONE minute and very often I couldn't do that lol. It's a process and you'll get there. Be encourage. Try the coach feature of the Nike running app. That motivates you and it tell you exactly how to train towards your goal.

    Love u sis xx
    You are awesome xxx
