Photo of a quaint little bookshop called “Paper Based Bookshop” that sells predominantly local literature. I love this little store!
So I didn’t post a my Reading Lately post last month because I only finished one book. As I said in this post, I’ve been struggling with my reading lately. That hasn’t happened in years, but I’ve also never lived through a global pandemic. You can check out yesterday’s post for more on how I have personally been dealing with the effects of a COVID-19 world.
Anyway, we’re creeping back into the reading over here and I’m back today with 5 books!
These are the books Ive been reading lately:
Loved it:
My favourite half night stand ~ Christina Lauren
I actually really loved the development of the romance in this story even though the friend to lover trope isn’t my faves (or rather isn’t always pulled off the best). Anyway for a shorter book I got invested in Millie and Reid.
Loved that the characters were multi-faceted and would generally recommend this to anyone looking for a contemporary romance that’s funny and sassy with moments of intensity. Exactly what I needed.

The party ~ Lisa Hall
I really enjoyed this one. It hooked me from the beginning and while my mind briefly suspected the perpetrator I truly was surprised at the end.
It’s a psychological thriller that follows Rachel who wakes up from a big neighborhood party disheveled and bruised. She soon believes she was drugged and assaulted and when the case quickly goes cold, she takes the investigation into her own hands. No one can be trusted and it seems most of the men in her life have some motive.
A good physiological thriller. I liked how the hart topics (sexual assault, spousal abuse, infidelity etc) were dealt with. Totally recommend.

I’m watching you ~ Teresa Driscoll
I couldn’t put this down. I just had to know what happened. A thriller with lots of twists and turns, a creepy undertone throughout and a satisfying end.
Ella overhears two girls on a train flirting with two men. She gets a bad feeling. When she sees on the news the next day that one of the girls is missing she is filled with guilt. The story follows the families of the two girls and Ella (who has since been receiving threatening letters) and a year later, they are still trying to figure out what happened. It’s a wild ride.
100% would recommend.

Tweet cute ~ Emma Lord
What an adorable rom com. I mean we follow two characters who are the children of the owners of competing sandwich companies. The blurb says that ‘all’s fair includes love and cheese’ and cheesy it is (I mean the main character are Pepper and Jack … as in pepperjack).
Anyway although it’s cheesy it’s not one dimensional and there’s a lot of complexities to make it interesting and captivating (that gossip girl-esque app added a cute touch to the romance).
I definitely recommend if you want a lighter read.

Liked it:
Children of virtue and vengeance ~ Tomi Adeyemi
This is the second book in the legacy of Orisha series.
Like so many, when I read children of blood and bone, I couldn’t put it down and rated it one of my best reads of 2018. It wasn’t the same for this one. I could put it down, and did in fact put it down several times while reading it.
Although magic is back in the land of Orisha, the majis are still not safe. My gripe is that none of the characters with ‘power’ had any sense of direction. The book felt all over the place. The characters of the first book felt like they lost direction (some of it intentional and in some ways understandable but still very noticeable).
Overall I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the story for all its faults and I will definitely continue the series (the ending definitely made me curious).
